Sanura Dewa

Initiatives Associate

Operations and People

Sanura (she/her) joins Common Future as the Initiatives Associate. She is first-generation American and a proud descendant of Nigerian and Tanzanian parents. Her upbringing has taught her the importance of serving her community with intention and care by creating sustainable solutions that benefit everyone, especially those in marginalized communities.

Prior to joining Common Future, Sanura was an AmeriCorps VISTA Fellow at the Alameda Point Collaborative whose mission is to end homelessness by providing permanent housing, resources and access to green spaces. In this role she worked on an urban farm managing various projects and improving processes around food recovery, community supported agriculture, regenerative farm practices, DEI values, safe/brave spaces, and conflict and harm reduction.

When Sanura is not working at Common Future, she is a consultant and facilitator at Repair the World, a Jewish-led community service non-profit, where she facilitates conversations and teaches communities how to engage in and work through conflict using transformative justice and Jewish principles. She helps her various clients understand how their respective identities, privileges, and relationships can influence the way they engage in generative conflict with their communities. She has found that equipping her clients with this kind of information brings forth more self-awareness, candid dialogue to uncover the root causes of harm and how to actively stop these patterns from unfolding.

In her free time, you can find Sanura house/pet sitting, reading, cooking, baking, singing, doing yoga and spending time with her chosen family. Sanura has previously worked at BNY Mellon, Carbon Lighthouse and Mangalam Research Center. She also holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Spelman College and a B.Eng. in Earth & Environmental Engineering from Columbia University.
